Ishigaki or Miyako: choose by the trip you want

Ishigaki or Miyako comes down to one question: do you want to hop between islands by boat, or drive between beaches over bridges? Choose Ishigaki for island hopping and Iriomote's jungle rivers, Miyako for long beaches you reach by car. There is no ferry between the two, so doing both means a 30-minute flight.

The quick verdict

Why Ishigaki: boats to seven islands

Pick Ishigaki if the boat is the point of your day. Everything leaves from one terminal in town, a walk from most hotels, and you need no car on the small islands.

Plan the boats in the island-hopping planner, and compare the islands on which island.

Why Miyako: bridges and beaches

Pick Miyako if you want to drive and swim. Irabu Bridge is 3,540 m long and links Miyako with Irabu Island, and smaller bridges connect Irabu and Shimoji↗. Ikema Bridge runs from Miyako's northern tip to Ikema Island, and Kurima Bridge leaves south of Yonaha Maehama Beach (same source).

The island is compact: Visit Okinawa puts the drive between its two capes at about 45 minutes. It also calls Miyako a diving destination with many underwater caves, and lists snorkelling tours from Aragusuku and Shigira beaches↗.

Flights: who flies direct, as the airports publish

Both islands have direct flights from Tokyo, Osaka and Naha. Miyako has two airports: Miyako Airport and Miyako Shimojishima Airport on Shimoji Island. As published on 7 Nov 2026:
