Best time to visit Ishigaki: month by month

For beach weather, go from late June to July: the rainy season normally ends around 21 June and July is Ishigaki's sunniest month. For warm sea with fewer typhoons and fewer people, pick late October to November; for the quietest island, February.
Ishigaki weather and crowds by month
Temperature, rain and sunshine are the 1991 to 2020 normals for the Ishigaki-jima station (石垣島) of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA normals, Ishigaki-jima). Typhoon approaches are the JMA 1991 to 2020 monthly averages for the Okinawa region, counted when a typhoon centre comes within 300 km of a JMA station there (JMA typhoon normals). Visitors are all arrivals to the Yaeyama islands in 2025, cruise passengers included (Okinawa Prefecture, Yaeyama monthly arrivals).

| Year | 24.5 | 2,095.5 | 1,852.5 | 7.7 | 1,506,052 |
"0.0" means typhoons came close in some years but averaged under 0.05 a month; "none" means no case in 1991 to 2020 (JMA typhoon normals). No official monthly sea temperature for the Yaeyama area was found, so the table leaves it out. For Okinawa as a whole, Visit Okinawa gives about 21 °C in February to nearly 30 °C in August (Visit Okinawa, when to visit). The 2025 total was a record for the Yaeyama islands, helped by a year with no typhoon cancellations (Okinawa Prefecture, 2025 annual summary).
Rainy season (baiu)
Okinawa's rainy season starts around 10 May and ends around 21 June in a normal year, the 1991 to 2020 average (JMA, rainy season 2026). Real years swing widely. In 2025 it ran from about 5 May to 7 June; in 2026 from about 4 May to 29 June, eight days later than normal (JMA, Okinawa rainy season record). June still logs 212.9 hours of sunshine on Ishigaki, more than any month from October to May (JMA normals).
Typhoon season
The Okinawa region averages 7.7 typhoon approaches a year. August (2.2), September (1.9), July (1.5) and October (1.1) carry most of them (JMA typhoon normals). Boats suffer more than planes. Yaeyama Kanko Ferry suspends sailings at winds of 15 m/s, waves of 3.0 m or visibility under 500 m (YKF Q&A), and Visit Okinawa warns that ship services stay affected longer than flights (Visit Okinawa, typhoon precautions). From July to October, keep one spare day before your flight home. What to do on the day is on rough sea and typhoons.
Habu jellyfish advisory
Okinawa Prefecture's 2026 habu jellyfish (ハブクラゲ) advisory ran from 1 June to 30 September, the months when stings peak. In 2025, 81 of 199 reported stings and bites from dangerous sea creatures, about 40.7%, were habu jellyfish (Okinawa Prefecture, habu jellyfish). The advisory overlaps the best beach weather, so it shapes how you swim, not whether you go. Snorkel spots and safety notes are on snorkelling.
Manta season
Reef mantas live around Ishigaki all year, and July to mid-October gives the best chance (Visit Okinawa, Ishigaki Island). Visit Okinawa lists April to November as the high-chance months at Manta Scramble (Visit Okinawa, Yaeyama diving). That window is also typhoon season, so a manta trip in August needs slack in the plan. Sites and tour choices: manta rays.
Winter north winds and ferry cancellations
From September to April the most frequent wind on Ishigaki is north-north-east; from May to August it is south (JMA normals). North winds hit the open-sea routes. Anei Kanko says Uehara and Hatoma are cancelled more often than Ohara, and that in the winter monsoon cancellations often run for days (Anei Q&A). YKF says the same of Uehara, while Ohara, Taketomi, Kohama and Kuroshima are sheltered by islands and reefs. It publishes a winter replacement bus timetable via Ohara for October 2026 to February 2027 (YKF Uehara guide). In winter, plan Iriomote through Ohara and read rough sea and typhoons.
Japanese holiday peaks
JNTO names three peaks when prices rise and hotels and transport fill up: New Year from 27 December to 4 January, Golden Week from 29 April to 5 May, and the Bon week around 15 August, each with adjacent weekends (JNTO FAQ). In 2027 Golden Week holidays fall on Thursday 29 April and Monday 3 to Wednesday 5 May (Cabinet Office, national holidays). Other 2027 long weekends: Marine Day 19 July, Respect for the Aged Day 20 September and Sports Day 11 October (Cabinet Office). The Yaeyama islands keep Obon by the lunar calendar, listed under August (Taketomi Town Tourism Association calendar). The arrival figures show the effect: August 2025 had 164,644 visitors, almost double February's 87,852 (Okinawa Prefecture). For these dates, book rooms and car rental first, then tours.
Festivals with dates
- Kuroshima Cow Festival (黒島牛まつり): last Sunday of February (Taketomi Town Tourism Association calendar), so 28 February 2027.
- Yaeyama sea opening (海開き): around the spring equinox, held in turn by Ishigaki City, Taketomi Town and Yonaguni Town (Taketomi Town Tourism Association calendar).
- Ishigaki Island Triathlon: Sunday 18 April 2027, start 08:00 at the Painu Hama seaside park (Ishigaki Triathlon, official). At the 2024 race, roads on the course had one-lane closures from about 08:00 to 14:00 (Ishigaki Triathlon).
- Hatoma Island Music Festival (鳩間島音楽祭): 4 May (Taketomi Town Tourism Association calendar), inside Golden Week.
- Tanadui (種子取祭), Taketomi: said to date back about 600 years, and a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, held around the kanoe-tora and kanoto-u days of the ninth lunar month (Taketomi Town). The dances on days seven and eight at Yomochi Utaki are the highlight; in 2026 they fall on 12 and 13 November (Taketomi Town Tourism Association, Tanadui). The 2027 dates were not published when checked.
Getting there: ferry to Taketomi, Kuroshima and Hatoma.
Verdict: which month for what
| You want | Go in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beach and snorkelling | Late June to July | Rainy season normally over by 21 June; July has 261 h of sun |
| Diving and mantas | July to mid-October, or April to May | Best manta odds in summer; spring avoids most typhoons |
| Lower prices | Mid-January to February | Outside JNTO's peak windows; fewest arrivals in 2025 |
| Quiet islands | February | 87,852 visitors in 2025, the year's low |
| Calm ferries to every island | May to June | South winds, not the north winds that cancel Uehara and Hatoma; few typhoons; pack for rain |
| Culture | November | Tanadui on Taketomi |
