Kohama Island: day trip from Ishigaki

A quiet island between Ishigaki and Iriomote with a hilltop view over almost all of Yaeyama and cane-field roads made for a bike.

What to see and know

• Said to be the centre of the Yaeyama Islands. The top of Ufudaki Hill (99 m) is the best place to see nearly all the archipelago. (Taketomi Town, Kohama Island (English))
• Became nationally known as the setting of the NHK drama Churasan. (Taketomi Town, Kohama Island (English))
• About 8 square kilometres, between Ishigaki and Iriomote. Coral Beach (north) suits snorkelling; Kubazaki Beach (west) looks across to Iriomote. (Visit Okinawa Japan, Kohama Island)
• Sugar Road runs through cane fields and pastures and suits cycling. Bikes can be rented at the port and at many accommodations. (Visit Okinawa Japan, Kohama Island)
