For how many days in Ishigaki, the answer for a first trip is three nights: one sheltered island day, one Iriomote day and one spare day for weather or the reef. Two nights covers Taketomi and Kabira Bay; five adds a car day and a sea day; seven lets you sleep a night on Hateruma.
What each kind of day needs
Build your stay from four kinds of day. Count them, and you have your number of nights.
- Ferry day: one island, or two close ones. Taketomi takes 10 to 15 minutes, Iriomote via Ohara 40 to 45 minutes↗↗. Iriomote needs a full day.
- Car day: Kabira Bay, Yonehara and the north capes. The road round the island is 160 km, so a full loop takes a full day↗. Licence rules are on car rental.
- Sea day: a half-day boat trip for the Blue Cave, turtles or mantas. Most tours last about three hours with pickup, so the afternoon stays free for town.
- Arrival day: the airport bus to town runs every 30 minutes and costs ¥550↗↗. Use the rest of it for town, soba and Banna Park.
Put the ferry days early. If a boat is cancelled, you still have days to move it.
Two nights: Taketomi and Kabira
Enough for a taste, not for Iriomote.
- Day 1: arrive, bus to town, evening at the market street and a soba dinner.
- Day 2: Taketomi in half a day. The plan takes the 08:30 YKF boat out and the 12:50 Anei boat back, which gives you 4 hours on the island. Then Kabira Bay in the afternoon: Azuma route 9 leaves the Bus Terminal at 12:55 and 16:15↗. Details on the Kabira Bay page.
- Day 3: a morning sea trip if your flight is late, such as the Blue Cave tour with turtle snorkel. Otherwise, fly.
Three nights: the first-trip answer
Take the three-day island-hopping plan and add your arrival evening.
- Day 1: Kohama and Taketomi. Both routes are sheltered and run often. The plan leaves at 07:30 for Kohama and ends back from Taketomi at 16:05.
- Day 2: Iriomote via Ohara. Out at 07:30, back at 17:15, with 8 hours 15 minutes on the island for Yubu Island and the Nakama River. A guided mangrove paddle with Yubu Island takes care of transfers on the island.
- Day 3: the spare. If a boat was cancelled, move that island here. If not, take Kuroshima, a sea trip, or a car to the north.
Boat times come from the operators' timetables, which run to 28 February 2027 for YKF and 31 March 2027 for Anei↗↗. Change any day in the island-hopping planner.
Five nights: add the car and the sea
Five nights is the comfortable trip. Keep the three days above and add two.
- Day 4: car day. Kabira Bay at 09:00 for the first glass-bottom boat↗, Yonehara if calm, Tamatorizaki and Hirakubo-zaki, then sunset on the west coast. Compare rental cars for one 24-hour hire.
- Day 5: sea day. A half-day boat for the Blue Cave, Phantom Island or mantas in the morning, town in the afternoon. Options and safety are on snorkelling and manta rays.
With five nights, use day 3 for the open-sea island you wanted most, such as Hatoma, and keep day 5 as the backup.
Seven nights: a night on Hateruma
Use a week to sleep on Hateruma, the island for Nishihama Beach and the night sky. Only Anei sails there, twice a day each way: 08:00 and 14:30 out, 09:50 and 16:20 back, on open sea↗. Anei prints 60 to 90 minutes for the crossing. The Hateruma overnight plan takes the 08:00 boat on day one and the 16:20 boat back on day two.
- Days 1 to 5: the five-night plan.
- Days 6 and 7: Hateruma overnight. Book a stay on Hateruma before the boat.
- Day 8: fly home, with a spare morning in case the boat back was cancelled.
Put Hateruma in the middle of the week, not at the end. Anei says its open-sea routes can cancel for days in rough weather↗.
The month changes the answer
Add one night from July to October. The Okinawa region averages 7.7 typhoon approaches a year, most of them in August, September, July and October↗. YKF suspends sailings at winds of 15 m/s or waves of 3.0 m↗.
In winter, plan Iriomote via Ohara, not Uehara. YKF says Uehara cancels most often, while Ohara, Taketomi, Kohama and Kuroshima are sheltered↗. Month-by-month weather is on best time to visit.
{{note}}On any day, check whether the boats are running before you leave the hotel. The ferry status page reads both operators' status pages and keeps a cancellation history.{{/note}}

Questions
Is one day in Ishigaki enough? Only for Taketomi and Kabira Bay, back to back. You will miss Iriomote, which needs a full day of its own.
Is a week in Ishigaki too long? No, if you use the islands. A week gives you every sheltered island, Iriomote, a car day, a sea day and a night on Hateruma, with room for weather.
Should I stay on Iriomote instead of day-tripping? Only if you want two days of hiking or a night tour there. For one day, the Ohara boats from Ishigaki work. See where to stay.
How many days do I need for Ishigaki and Miyako? At least six nights, because there is no ferry between them and only three flights a day. See Ishigaki or Miyako.
