Ishigaki with kids is easiest when the boats are short: start with Taketomi, 10 to 15 minutes across on a sheltered route, where a buffalo cart does the walking and Kondoi Beach has toilets and a shallow sandbar. On Ishigaki itself, swim at netted beaches such as Fusaki, see Kabira Bay through the floor of a glass-bottom boat, and book car seats with the car.
Which islands and boats suit children
Choose sheltered crossings. The operators describe Taketomi, Kohama, Kuroshima and Ohara on Iriomote as sheltered by islands and reefs, and Uehara as the route cancelled most often↗↗.
- Taketomi, first: 10 to 15 minutes across, with boats roughly every half hour↗↗. Use the half-day plan.
- Kohama and Kuroshima: 25 to 30 minutes across↗. Kuroshima is flat for cycling↗ and has a research centre with sea turtles↗.
- Iriomote via Ohara: 40 to 45 minutes, and children under primary school age cross to Yubu Island free↗.
- Leave for later: Hatoma and Hateruma, on open sea with few boats. The which-island table rates Hatoma hard with small children.
Child fares, from the operators
On both ferry companies, adults are junior high school age and up, children are primary school age, and one infant per adult rides free on a lap↗↗. Child one-way fares, including fuel surcharge:
| Route | Child one way | Child return |
|---|---|---|
| Taketomi | ¥510 | ¥990 |
| Kohama | ¥870 | ¥1,680 |
| Kuroshima | ¥950 | ¥1,840 |
| Iriomote, Ohara | ¥1,290 | ¥2,500 |
| Hateruma (Anei only) | ¥2,500 | ¥4,850 |
The surcharge changes, so check the fare page before you travel. Tickets work only on the company that sold them.
Activities, as published:
- Taketomi buffalo cart: ¥2,900 for ages 6 to 11 and ¥1,900 for ages 3 to 5; one child aged 0 to 2 rides free per adult; cashless only (as published on 3 Nov 2026, Taketomi Kanko Center). Or book the cart with the return ferry on one ticket.
- Yubu Island cart and entry: ¥1,000 for primary school children, free below primary age (as published on 3 Nov 2026, Yubu Island).
- Kabira Bay glass-bottom boat: ¥1,200 for ages 4 to 11; one child aged 3 or under rides free on a lap (as published on 7 Nov 2026, Kabira Marine Service).
- Azuma sightseeing bus: ¥4,800 for ages 6 to 11 with lunch; one child under 6 per adult rides free, without lunch↗.
- Buses: Azuma's 24-hour pass costs ¥500 for children↗; Iriomote's route bus charges children half fare↗.
Beaches with toilets and nets

Swim where there is a net and a lifeguard. These are the beaches with facilities confirmed by an official page:
- Fusaki Beach, Ishigaki: free entry and parking, lifeguards, a jellyfish net, toilets, showers, lockers and a shop; swimming 09:00 to 17:00 depending on season↗. Bus route 9 stops at Fusaki Beach Resort, ¥360 from the Bus Terminal↗.
- Maesato Beach, Ishigaki: the same facilities, with a season of 15 March to November↗. Route 10 stops at the ANA InterContinental next to it↗.
- Kondoi Beach, Taketomi: toilets, changing rooms, picnic tables and a shallow sandbar that Visit Okinawa calls safe for children↗. Shade was not described on an official page, so bring a beach shelter or hats.
- Sukuji Beach, Ishigaki: shallow and calm, with lifeguards and a summer net listed, but that listing dates from 2022↗.
Skip Kabira Bay for swimming, which is closed because of pearl cultivation↗, and Kaiji Beach on Taketomi, where swimming is not allowed because of strong currents↗.
Jellyfish: June to September
{{note}}Okinawa's 2026 habu jellyfish advisory ran from 1 June to 30 September. Cover children's skin with a rash guard, keep them inside the nets and carry vinegar↗. If stung, do not rinse with fresh water; pour on plenty of vinegar and get medical help↗.{{/note}}
Sea trips for non-swimmers and small swimmers
Start with the glass-bottom boat at Kabira, 30 minutes with no swimming at all↗. Details are on the Kabira Bay page.
For older children who want to see fish up close without swimming, look at the sea walk on the reef, which our snorkelling page lists for non-swimmers; check the minimum age on the listing. Confident swimmers can join a small-group turtle snorkel, again after checking the age rules.
Car seats and getting around
Book the seats with the car. Japanese law requires children under six to ride in a child seat or infant seat. Toyota Rent a Car charges ¥1,650 per rental for a child or infant seat and ¥1,100 for a booster, which it lists for ages of about 3 to 12↗. Pickups and licence rules are on car rental, or compare cars on Klook.
On Taketomi, Taketomi Kanko Center rents bikes with child seats (front up to 15 kg, rear up to 18 kg) and kids' bikes, but not for babies under one↗. Kuroshima Rental Cycle also lists child seats and kids' bikes↗.
At the airport: Ishigaki Airport has nursing rooms in the domestic terminal and the departure lounges, baby chairs in most toilets and children's chairs in the food court↗.
